Beauty (excerpt)
①All nature is meant to make us think of paradise,” Thomas Merton observed. ② Because the Creation puts on a nonstop show, beauty is free and inexhaustible, but we need training in order to perceive more than the most obvious kinds. ③ Even 15 billion years or so after the Big Bang, echoes of that event still linger in the form of background radiation, only a few degrees above absolute zero. ④Just so, I believe, the experience of beauty is an echo of the order and power that permeate the universe. ⑤ To measure background radiation, we need subtle instruments; to measure beauty, we need alert intelligence and our five keen senses.
①Anyone with eyes can take delight in a face or a flower. ②You need training, however, to perceive the beauty in mathematics or physics or chess, in the architecture of a tree, the design of a bird's wing, or the shiver of breath through a flute. ③ For most of human history, the training has come from elders who taught the young how to pay attention. ④ By paying attention, we learn to savor all sorts of patterns, from quantum mechanics to patchwork quilts. ⑤ This predilection brings with it a clear evolutionary advantage, for the ability to recognize patterns helped our ancestors to select mates, find food, avoid predators. ⑥ But the same advantage would apply to all species, and yet we alone compose symphonies and crossword puzzles, carve stone into statues, map time and space.
① Have we merely carried our animal need for shrewd perceptions to an absurd extreme? ② Or have we stumbled onto a deep congruence between the structure of our minds and the structure of the universe?

Forgetting the Past Is a Crime
Today remnants of the Japanese militarists still refuse to admit the aggression against China and other Asian countries by Japanese imperialism. As a Chinese, however, I can never forget the blood debts owed by the Japanese military to the Chinese people. During the eight-year War of Resistance Against Japan, Japanese troops killed a total of more than 20 million Chinese. In the Rape of Nanking alone, they slaughtered as many as 300,000, most of them old and weak and women and children. The monstrous crimes of the Japanese military have been evidenced by hard facts. And what's more, some Japanese ex-soldiers who took part in massacres, .brutal acts of burying people alive, rapes or murders, have now been aroused by conscience to con- fess their crimes and show repentance. Could all that be covered up or blotted out by remnants of the Japanese militarists and a handful of Japanese politicians?
During the eight years when the Japanese invaders were running amok in China, they took the lives of three of my relatives. Today, in my declining years, I can still occasionally recall their features distinctly. No matter how hard the Japanese butchers may try to gloss over their wartime savagery in the name of patriotism or loyalty to the Mikado, the people of China will never forget their past crimes.

 Life in a Violin Case
Alexander Bloch
①The turning point of my life was my decision to give up a promising business career and study music. ②My parents, although sympathetic, and sharing my love of music, disapproved of it as a profession. ③This was understandable in view of the family background. ④My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years at Springhill College in Mobile and, though much beloved and respected in the community, earned barely enough to provide for his large family. ⑤My father often said it was only the hardheaded thriftiness of my grandmother that kept the wolf at bay. ⑥As a consequence of this example in the family, the very mention of music as a profession carried with it a picture of a precarious existence with uncertain financial rewards. ⑦My parents insisted upon college instead of a conservatory of music, and to college I went -quite happily, as I remember, for although I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time practicing, I had many other interests.
①Before my graduation from Columbia, the family met with severe financial reverses and I felt it my duty to leave college and take a job. ②Thus was I launched upon a business career.
①Now do not for a moment mean to disparage business. ② My whole point is that it was not for me. ③I went into it for money, and aside from the satisfaction of being able to help the family, money is all I got out of it. ④It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by. ⑤From being merely discontented I became acutely miserable. ⑥My one ambition was to save enough to quit and go to Europe to study music. ⑦I used to get up at dawn to practice before I left for "downtown", distracting my poor mother by bolting a hasty breakfast at the last minute. ⑧Instead of lunching with my business associates, I would seek out some cheap cafe, order a meager meal and scribble my harmony exercises.⑨ I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, accumulated enough to enable me to go abroad. ⑩ The family being once more solvent, and my help no longer necessary, I resigned from my position and, feeling like a man released from jail, sailed for Europe. ⑾I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before and enjoyed every minute of it.

2. Stump Watching
One day, a farmer of the kingdom of Sung was ploughing the field. Suddenly, he saw a rabbit dash into a tree trunk. The rabbit broke its neck and died instantly. The farmer was very glad that he got a rabbit without effort. From that day, he left his ploughing and kept watching by the big tree all day long in hopes of getting another rabbit this way. But a whole year passed and he got none. Looking back, he saw the field lie waste, overrun with weeds. He became a laughingstock of Sung.
